Usage: In a two-piece system, the pouch and skin barrier are two separate pieces that allow to change the pouch without removing the baseplate/skin barrier.
This means that patients don’t have to remove the adhesive plate from around the stoma every time they change the bag (for example, some people prefer to temporarily switch to a "mini-pouch" for swimming, intimate and other short-term activities).
The wafer/barrier is part of a "flange" unit. The pouches include a closing ring that attaches mechanically to a mating piece on the flange.
The method of attachment to the baseplate varies between manufacturers:
A common connection mechanism consists of a pressure fit snap ring (press-on/click), similar to that used in Tupperware™. You can hear and feel the system securely lock into place. Other mechanisms include permanent (one-piece), turning locking rings and "sticky" adhesive mounts.

The choice between a one-piece system and a two-piece system depends among other things on the amount of stool produced by the patient: as a basic rule, if the stoma produces a lot, it is better to have a two-piece system because a one-part system would mean peeling the adhesive off the skin rather often.
